History: Bushnell Motor Company, Matawan (1919)

Bushnell Motor Company of Matawan sold delivery trucks manufactured by Stewart Motor Corporation, according to the above advertisement on page 4 of the 31 July 1919 edition of The Matawan Journal. Stewart was in business from 1912 to 1939, according to the British Columbia Rock n' Bus Page's list of truck manufacturers. There are some other Stewart ads at Classic Car Ads.

The ad below appeared on page 5 of the 26 June 1919 edition, which also mentioned that George Wein of Browntown had recently accepted a position as bookkeeper with Bushnell. (This paper has an interesting article about how chemical manufacturing in New Jersey and on Staten Island, including dumping by the defense industries, was destroying the shellfish industry in Raritan Bay and making it hazardous to swim. It also mentions chemical effluent in the Passaic River and Newark Bay.)

The ad below, which appeared in the 10 July 1919 edition, says Bushnell Motor Co was located at 110 Main Street in Matawan. More recently, 110 Main was the site of Atlantic Glass Company. (above)
