News Updates as of 7 May 2009

News updates involving Aberdeen and vicinity:
  • The winners of the 16th Annual Family Fishing Contest have been announced. Both local and out of town talent were among the winners. The event was sponsored by the Aberdeen Township Environmental and Shade Tree Advisory Board.
  • A Middletown man agreed to a plea arrangement for burglaries in Aberdeen and other towns, as well as armed robberies at Dunkin Donuts in Middletown, according to the Asbury Park Press. He will serve a minimum 85% of a 12 year sentence.
  • South Brunswick's Mayor is not pleased with Monmouth Freeholder John D'Amico's proposals to run the MOM rail line from Lakehurst to his town either through Monmouth Battlefield or through a $1 billion tunnel under existing homes, according to the Star-Ledger. The proposals are a non-starter as currently envisioned, Frank Gambatese said. It's unclear whether the western alternative is truly losing favor, but if so, the option to run the line up the Hudson Trail to an Aberdeen-Matawan junction, as well as options involving South Amboy or Red Bank, may soon be back on the table unless the 20-year old rail line idea loses steam once and for all.
  • Matawan Advocate is talking up a clean up day in Matawan set for Saturday 9 May 2009.
