Laurence Harbor Haunted by Hazardous Waste Dumped Decades Ago
2500 feet of the Laurence Harbor seawall at Old Bridge Waterfront Park just off Route 35 have been cordoned off with large black fencing and warning signs to protect the public from hazardous waste discovered there. According to a notice posted in late July by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), blast furnace bottoms consisting of arsenic, lead, antimony, and copper were deposited in the 1960s and 1970s along the Laurence Harbor waterfront as well as the Cheesequake Creek inlet and waterfront area in Sayreville. The whole mess was discovered by NJ DEP and has being designated the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Site. A removal assessment is underway. For further information, including official contacts, see the On Scene Coordinator page run by the EPA.
