I totally missed the news that today was Salt Water Day in Old Bridge. I would've gone! If I couldn't have attended, I would have certainly written it up in my blog before the event.
There were articles in The Suburban, MyCentralJersey.com, even the KidFunAroundOldBridge blog. There were notices seeking vendors in The Sentinel, MyCentralJersey.com. A Laurence Harbor website and the First Aid Squad publicized the event. Oh, well. I hope everyone had fun.
This 1991 NY Times article If You're Thinking About Living in Old Bridge, NJ mentioned Salt Water Day.
Each August, residents gather on the Laurence Harbor beach for Salt Water Day, two days of games, boat races, music and dancing sponsored by the township. According to Alvia Martin, curator of the Thomas Warne Historical Museum and Library on Route 516, the festival was begun by Indians who gathered on the beach every year about the same time because that was when "the oysters were the juiciest." The tradition was carried on by settlers who took advantage of the August lull between planting and harvesting.
I had a nice day, just the same. The family went to the movies. We went to Hazlet Multiplex and saw Julie and Julia. It was simply delightful. I highly, highly recommend it. As a bonus, the story involves a woman who begins to write a blog (see The Julie/Julia Project at Salon.com) and all that that entails. Huffington Post has a movie review that gives the writer's personal perspectives on the blogging aspect of this true story. (The Child sisters reminded me of the Pigeon sisters, for those of you old enough to remember the tv series or watch it in re-runs.)
After the movie we went to Bertucci's and shared a pizza and salad for three for only $25 plus beverages. It would be nice if Bertucci's extended their lunch menu time to 4 pm so those who see a 1pm movie can still squeeze in a sandwich and soup before the dinner selection is all that's available.
